Walks in Heraklion: at the seafront, central part

⏩ The central part of the seafront of Heraklion is located on the northern part of the old city, practically on the route of the massive Venetian sea walls. In the east end there is the port, including the old Venetian harbor and arsenal, as well as the impressive landmark, the naval fortress Rocca a Mare / Koules built during the 16th century. The seafront was a popular walking place for decades, and in recent years redevelopment works were undertaken.

Still, the shopping areas and the majority of hood and hospitality places were in the interior of the city. Probably this seems somehow weird, but keep in mind that although is wonderful to wander in the seafront during calm days, northerlies winds in wintertime make the walks there quite uncomfortable.

⇑ Pros: Redeveloped area, seafront, walks, monuments

Cons: Exposed to strong northerlies winds in wintertime, cycling in some parts of the route needs attention

⇨ Where to go: besides the route on the sea walls, in the seafront there are also prominent monuments, namely the Venetian Basilica of Saint Peter and the complex of a Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian period tower with a Venetian ruined church, the Santa Catarina Ruinata. Moreover, in the area there are two Museums, the Historical Museums of Crete in a reused historic building and the Natural History Museum of Crete, in the place of the old electric power plant by the sea. Of course, there are many taverns on the seaside road, especially for seafood, and some coffee shops. You can also visit the local fishermen's market. In overall, walking at the seaside route in Heraklion is a really wonderful experience.

You can also continue exploring the seafront of Heraklion heading to the west part.

🔝 Best time to visit: in noon or dawn, during Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
