Local markets in Heraklion: fishermen's market in the old port

In the west end of the central part of the seafront at Heraklion, there is the old port, the Venetian harbor of the city. In the northern part of the roundabout above the old port (18 Anglon sq.) you can find the local fishermen's market. The fish market is located close to the port, so purchasing fish from the fishermen there, it's almost like buying it off their boat, as fresh as it gets; moreover you can improve sustainability supporting the community of local fishermen in shortening and straightening the supply chain.

Going to the market yesterday, we were lucky enough to find this big and fresh grouper (rofos Epinephelus marginatus), of about 8 kg in weight and more than 0,60 m. in length.

Delicious!

⇑ Pros: Fresh fish, local, and in season. Low prices, especially for overlooked fishes you can find there - and they are very tasty too.

Cons: The market comprised by a metal shed.

⇨ Where to go / what to do

  • You can walk on the seafront, visit the Venetian naval fortress Rocca a Mare / Koules and wander in the jetty and the old port; visit also other nearby monuments, or just go for a coffee or seafood.
  • When in the fishermen's market, take a look at the fish and think how many species you can recognize - and of course you can buy fish!

🔝 Best time to visit: all over the year, 08:00 - 14:00

The view from the fishermen's market place:
