Saint Demetrius church at Agios Dimitrios: unknown Byzantine monuments in Crete

⏩ The church of Saint Demetrius (Agios Dimitrios) at the small settlement of Agios Dimitrios, about 8 klm SE of Rethymnon, is one of the most significant, and at the same time unknown, Christian monuments in Crete. The architectural plan is corresponding to a crossed-dome church, dated to the 11th century. The nearby village was named after this church, and the place is wonderful and scenic. After the recent conservation and rehabilitation works, the monument became an upcoming destination for religious tourism and pilgrimage.

The monument is typical of the religious architecture of the middle Byzantine period displaying characteristic features such arced openings, blind arches, and tiled decoration. When visiting the monument note the four marble columns with Corinthian capitals and the mural painting of Saint Tryfon at the south wing.

🔝 Best time to visit:  on the evening of 25th of October and the morning of 26th of October, the celebrating day of Saint Demetrius.
