The best things in life are free: Kalamaki beach, south Heraklion region

Under the shadow of a tamarisk, we were lucky enough to get a good spot, and to locate two sunbeds which were for free, or at least no one came to ask for money. So we were happy to plop down on for the day.
Kalamaki beach, near the well-known village Matala, at the southern part of the region of Heraklion, is a sandy beach looking westwards to the Libyan sea and Paximadia isles. Probably the sunset there is amazing...

⇑ Pros: large sandy beach, relaxing and quiet but at the same time having facilities as it is near Kalamaki village where there are shops, café bars, taverns and hotels, a classic family beach spot, on-street parking, value for money, you can find tamarisks for shadow and even free sunbeds or use sunbeds and umbrellas ordering only coffees or beverages.

Cons: be aware of the bedrock in some parts of the beach, exposed to westerlies, scenic but average beach for the Cretan standards.

Important info: on the beach there are nests of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

🔝 Best time to visit: May - October, in the morning or evening (usually windy in the afternoon).

Our review: 4 out of 5.
