Walks in Heraklion: at the seafront, west part

⏩ The 2004 Olympics was not only a major athletic event in Greece, but also formed a milestone for the development or redevelopment of many areas. In the western part of Heraklion seafront, former industrial area, a new stadium was built and the whole seaside route from the city center (about 1,5 klm) was redeveloped with pedestrian ways and parks (recently even a dog park was added !). Many inhabitants and visitors of the city go there for walking, cycling or training, and is an upcoming place for relax and coffee walks.

⇑ Pros: Redeveloped area, seafront, walks, cycling, dog friendly

Cons: Exposed to strong northerlies winds in wintertime

⇨ Where to go: we love to walk around with takeaway coffee! Of course there are some places nearby to eat, and drink coffee and beverages. Even a shopping mall and cineplex is open in the close vicinity. If there were however more options, it would be better. Moreover, in the west end, there is a small river: you can pass the highway flanking the pedestrian route (be careful while crossing! Better use the underground passage) and discover the only one still-standing railway iron bridge in Crete - yes this seafront route was constructed on a lost industrial railway line.

You can also continue exploring the seafront of Heraklion heading to the central part.

🔝 Best time to visit: in sunset, during Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
