Beaches in Agios Nikolaos area: Almyros wetland

⏩ In the area of Agios Nikolaos, both to the north and south - southeast there many wonderful beaches, with scenic terrain and crystal clear water.

Almyros beach is located near the town of of Agios Nikolaos, about 5 kilometers to the south. The place name is derived by the constant presence of brackish water (almyros = salty) by the nearby karstic springs. This spring is one of the three in total "Almyros" springs in Crete. The brackish water flows into the sea through a torrent and a marsh by the sandy beach. The geomorphology formed a prominent wetland site covering an area of 50.000 square meters, listed as protected area of a small insular wetland site in national legislation (OGG, 2012).

⇑ Pros: sandy beach, facilities, close to the town and the highway, wetland listed area.

Cons: overcrowded during summer period, not recommended for privacy, diving or snorkeling.

⇨ Where to go / what to do: This beach is ideal for swimming! It's shallow and ideal for kids. There a beach bar there, and water sports center. If you want icy cool water try to swim in Almyros torrent or the place where the water from the torrent merges with sea. Moreover you can explore the wetland, always being cautious about the protection of the site (keep the wetland clean, be aware not to destroy flora or disturb fauna).

🔝 Best time to visit:  April - October for sea, October - May for birdwatching.
